"At the beginning of the 21st century, in the computer age we still believe in the irreplaceability of the human voice, the instruments made of natural materials and the power of the traditional music."
The Budapest-based Vasmalom combines Hungarian and southeast European traditional music with elements of improvisation and contemporary music. The band mixes the power of traditional music and the playfulness of contemporary music to create an energetic, exciting and unique sound. Their pieces combine instrumental composition, traditional music and folk song. It is one of the most exciting Hungarian ethno, or world music bands. Vasmalom founder Gábor Reothy, and the members of Vasmalom are the part of the first generation of Hungarian ethno bands and performers (e.g. Sebő, Muzsikás, Márta Sebestyén, Vujicsics, Vizöntő, etc.). First made their mark in the local folk music revival and dancehouse movement of the early 70s. The unique sounds of regional folk instruments such as the bagpipes, cimbalom, ütogardon and others are heard in their music.
